What to Say and What Not to Say in Your Online Profile

To say or not to say… that is the question that plagues many online daters as they ponder the completion of an online dating profile.  Just how much should you divulge to maximize your odds of attracting the right prospect?  To me, the answer comes down to three simple rules:

  1. Be Honest
  2. Be Interesting
  3. Be Safe

First, everything you say should be honest and open.  I know, many people view profiles as advertising and believe the key is to say what others want to hear.  Sure that might bring in some additional prospects early on.  But after a date or two, people will realize the profile and the person have nothing in common.  So if your goal is a serious relationship don’t claim you’re looking for a fun, casual fling just to attract more mates.

Second, be interesting.  Saying you like to travel will not stand out compared to describing an exhilarating hike up a South American mountain.  Choose descriptive words that make your profile jump off the page and stand out from the crowd.  This is not the time to share your life story, but 2-3 juicy tidbits will separate you from your online dating competition.

Third, safety is a concern even before you meet for the first time.  Remember, thousands of people will have access to your profile.  Don’t say anything that you wouldn’t want all these new found friends to know about you.

There you have it… be honest, be interesting, be safe… and you’ll be on your way to saying what needs to be said when it comes to online dating profile success!
